Hello and welcome back to Bashan Talks! Today, we’re kicking off an exciting series on agricultural commodities trading, a free masterclass designed for those who want to understand the basics of this lucrative business.
What is Agricultural Commodities Trading?
Think of it like being a middleman at a Nigerian party: Auntie A has two bags of rice, and Uncle B is looking for some. You step in, connect the two, and boom—you’ve made money!
In real terms, agricultural commodities trading is about buying, selling, and distributing crops like maize, sesame seeds, cashew nuts, and even products like palm oil. Unlike farming, you’re not planting or waiting for harvest. Instead, you’re moving goods from farmers who need cash now to buyers who need the goods as soon as yesterday.
A Real-Life Scenario: Malam Musa and the Maize
Picture this: Malam Musa, a maize farmer in Kaduna, has just harvested 100 bags of maize. He’s under pressure; his kids’ school fees are due, and he can’t store the maize. Meanwhile, in Lagos, a poultry feed processor is desperate for maize but can’t find reliable suppliers.
That’s where you come in. You buy Malam Musa’s maize at a fair price, ship it to Lagos, and sell it for a sweet profit. It’s that simple!
Farming vs. Trading: Which is Better for You?
Many have asked whether I encourage farming versus trading. I believe farming and trading are equally important value points in agribusiness. However, for ease of performance, I often align better with trading, especially if:
- Your cash capital is not much: You can start with as little as ₦100,000. Try buying products around you during harvest and selling later when prices go up. Be creative; there are definitely agricultural commodities with high profit potential that you just haven’t discovered yet!
- You want a scalable business: Trading allows you to scale quickly.
- You want to start immediately: No waiting for planting seasons or harvest cycles.
Key Differences:
| Feature | Farming | Trading |
|---|---|---|
| Capital | Often requires significant investment | Can start with as little as ₦100,000 |
| Timeframe | Wait for months for harvest | Move goods in weeks (e.g., buy in November, sell in January) |
| Risk Focus | Rain, pests, Juju (yes, I said it!) | Logistics, price trends |
(Farmers, don’t worry! I will do a video about profitable farming opportunities that have made many millionaires in Nigeria in future episodes.)
Why Now is the Perfect Time for Agricultural Commodities Trading
Let me count the reasons:
- Ubiquitous Demand: Our population of over 200 million is hungry for food and raw materials.
- Regional & Export Potential: Nigerian cash crops are like gold in Europe and Asia.
- Seasonality Magic: You buy low during harvest and sell high during the offseason. This is the magic of agricultural commodity storage business! (You can also watch my video on how I made ₦100 million in a short period trading during my early years.)
A Real-Life Success Story: Abdul
As usual, I like giving real-life examples of successes. Let me tell you about Abdul, who started working with me after his graduation. I still have a video of him from an NTA documentary on my agribusiness years ago, where Abdul, really young then in his early 20s (he’s a big man now!), started small buying sesame seeds in Nasarawa State with little capital savings. He was also one of my regular, trusted suppliers of agro-commodities in Nasarawa.
Today, he trades practically every agro-commodity traded in Nasarawa. He recently told me how he supplied large quantities of rice last year (2024). Abdul is a graduate who has never looked for a job; instead, he created jobs for himself and his family. He has built a reputation for being trustworthy in the business (a bad name flies around very fast, and every trader avoids such a person). Abdul has done very well for himself and his family, building his own houses in Nasarawa and happily married. He recently admitted that he never thought he could make a happy living buying and selling agricultural commodities.
