Cashew Nuts: Nigeria’s Second Fastest-Selling Supermarket Product After Condoms — Here’s the Business Opportunity

Hello, great people of Nigeria —
Bash1 Talks is back with another episode, and today we’re diving into one of the most overlooked goldmines in agribusiness: the cashew nut trade and processing business.

Let me start with this shocking fact:

More than 95% of store owners I spoke to in Lagos said the only product that sells faster than cashew nuts in their shops is… condoms.

Yes — condoms are number one, and cashew nuts are number two.

Now imagine what that means for you if you can guarantee a reliable supply of well-processed cashew nuts.

Why Cashew Nuts?

Cashew nuts are one of the highest-selling products in supermarkets across Nigeria.
Demand is massive — both locally and internationally — but local supply is nowhere near enough. That means money is on the table for smart entrepreneurs.

Even roadside vendors selling cashew nuts by the cup at high traffic spots can barely keep up with demand. Yet, supermarket chains and mini-marts are struggling even more to find reliable local suppliers.

How I Discovered the Power of Cashew

I first discovered just how profitable cashew nuts could be during a trip to Dubai for the Gulfood Convention — the largest food trade show in the world.

While pitching my sesame seeds to a Vietnamese buyer, he asked about Nigerian cashew nuts. I told him I could source them from Nasarawa, but he said no — there’s a specific place in Nigeria that produces the best cashew nuts.

I asked, “Where?”
He replied, Oba.

Imagine that — a Vietnamese man, in Dubai, teaching me where the best cashew in Nigeria comes from. That was a wake-up call.

As soon as I got back to Nigeria, I went straight to Oba.
I knew nobody there, but when you really want something and go all in, doors open. Within weeks, I had established partnerships and entered the cashew nut business fully.

Focus of This Post: Local Cashew Nut Trade

I’ll discuss exporting cashew nuts in another episode. Today’s focus is on cashew nuts processed and sold within Nigeria.

True Story:

A few years ago, a businessman with 12 supermarkets in Lagos begged me to help him secure regular cashew nut supply for local sales.
He just couldn’t meet the demand. That’s how hot this market is.

How to Get Started in the Cashew Nut Business

There are two major ways to enter:

  1. Local Trade: Buy, process, and sell within Nigeria.
  2. Export Trade: Focus on international markets (to be covered in a later episode).

For now, here’s how to win locally:

Step 1: Identify High-Yield Cashew Producing Areas

Some of the most productive cashew regions in Nigeria include:

  • Ogbomosho, Oyo State
  • Oro, Kwara State
  • Aiyetoro, Kogi State
  • Oba, Enugu State

Others include parts of Nasarawa and Yenagoa in Bayelsa, but the above are top for commercial production.

✅ Step 2: Understand the Harvest Season

  • Cashew harvest starts from late January and ends around late March.
  • You must buy during this period — prices are lowest.

✅ Step 3: Dry and Store Properly

Cashew is very sensitive to moisture. Improper drying = spoilage.

  • Sun-dry for up to 2 weeks.
  • Then store in aerated sacks.
  • Moisture control is crucial.

✅ Step 4: Choose Your Business Path

Option A: Wholesale

Buy, dry, and sell to local cashew processors. Lower margin, faster turnover.

Option B: Process Yourself (Higher Profit)

  • Process manually using local techniques.
  • Most common method: burning in-shell cashew nuts to extract the edible kernel.
  • If you’re not an expert, hire experienced local processors.

Cashew nuts from Ogbomosho are processed this way in over 99% of cases.

✅ Step 5: Sell to Local Retailers

The easiest part of the business.

  • Once you have quality processed cashew nuts, walk into any shop, present your product, and offer a fair price.
  • Most will immediately agree to buy because the demand is that high.

Why Nigerians Love Cashew Nuts

Besides the taste, cashew nuts offer:

  • High protein content
  • Essential minerals, including zinc
  • It’s even considered a natural aphrodisiac.

Yes — that’s right. “Manpower.” That’s one more reason cashew flies off the shelves.

Recommendations by Region

Depending on where you live, here’s where you should focus:

  • Southwest Nigeria: Source from Ogbomosho or Oro.
  • Middle Belt & North: Try Nasarawa or Yenagoa.
  • East: Head straight to Oba, Enugu.

Final Thoughts

The local cashew nut business is ripe with opportunity, whether you start small or go all in.

As always, I operate an open-door policy for serious-minded people.
