Hello and welcome back to Bash1Talks! In today’s video, I’m going to guide you through how to identify highly profitable commodities, the key factors that determine a commodity’s success, and market research strategies to stay ahead of the game. By the end of this, you will know exactly how to make smart trading decisions and avoid costly mistakes, like I did when I started!

What Makes a Commodity Profitable?

Before getting into any business, you need to ask yourself: Is this commodity really worth my time and investment? Here are the critical factors:

1. Consistent Demand

If people want it consistently, selling it becomes easy. When you have to beg for buyers, then it’s a useless business to get into. If demand is not there from diverse places, then run away from that product!

2. Price Stability

Fluctuating prices can be risky. Stable markets mean predictable profits. This brings us to the topic of seasonality: buy during harvest season where prices are low and sell when demand skyrockets.

Important Note on Seasonality: You should be careful because some agricultural products are now being planted up to two or three seasons in a year. This can significantly affect price movement, making such a product not attractive for a storage business. However, it doesn’t stop you from trading if you have a constant supply contract for such a product.

3. Storage and Shelf Life

Perishable goods should be avoided at all costs if you are just starting out in this business. Focus on commodities with good storage and shelf life.

4. Market Access

Can you sell it locally and internationally? If your answer is yes, then you have a bigger playing field, and there will always be demand for your product.

How Do You Find the Best Commodities?

Success in agricultural trading is not guesswork; it is calculated. You need to research, analyze, and understand the market.

1. Monitor Prices Regularly

Visit your local market, check online. We have a platform, farmettrade.com, which we are still developing to help you with up-to-date price analysis for all agricultural products produced in Nigeria. Also, join our WhatsApp Community where you can network with other agribusiness people, ask questions, and contribute to help others succeed as you also succeed from the invaluable information shared on the platform.

2. Understand Demand Drivers

Which industries rely heavily on a particular product? For example:

  • Poultry Farms: There’s usually a high demand for maize and soybeans.
  • Hot Pepper/Spice: We all know that the Yorubas consume pepper more than any other tribe in Nigeria. Demand for hot pepper is highest in the western part of Nigeria.
  • Just check around you, be creative, and try to understand the demand driver for any agricultural product.

3. Stay Updated with Government Policy

A single policy can affect the entire profitability of a commodity. By this, I mean products that are likely to be subsidized or mass-imported into the country because the government lifts import tariffs on certain food or agricultural commodities.

By following this guide, I promise you, you should be able to streamline the best profitable agricultural commodities to trade.

Highly Profitable Commodities in Nigeria (Examples)

I’m going to mention a few commodities which are very profitable today in Nigeria:

  • Sesame Seeds: Profitable due to global demand in food and pharmaceuticals. Buy during harvest when prices are low and sell when demand rises, or find an exporter to supply regularly during the season with a guaranteed profit margin. If you have a lot of money, buy large volumes for export.
  • Maize (Corn): Essential for food and animal feed. Prices are lowest at harvest and increase during planting season.
  • Soybeans: A key ingredient for oil production and animal feed.
  • Cashew Nuts: Nigeria is a major global producer of cashew nuts. You can export raw nuts or process and sell them locally (I have a video about that as well).
  • Rice: Nigeria still relies on imports, creating gaps in local production. It’s also not news that some people are into the habit of repackaging local rice and selling it as foreign.
  • Egusi: This product has never failed me. It’s a regular in Nigerian food. You buy in bulk at harvest and sell later at a premium.
  • Shea Butter: Strong demand in cosmetics and the food industry.
  • Dried Pepper: Used in every Nigerian household with its very long storage life.

Remember, these are just a few examples. Be creative; there are many more profitable commodities that you can trade. Your success depends on how well you research and time your trading decisions.
