The Golden Opportunity: Supplying Authentic Nigerian Honey

The other day I went to buy honey at a big store in Lagos. The sales girl looked at me and proudly pointed to the foreign honey section. She couldn’t even consider that I might want Nigerian honey. And I told her straight, “Madam, this your mindset is part of the problem we are facing in this country!”

But I can’t blame her entirely, because the “wajala” (problem) actually starts from the root.

The Trust Problem in Nigerian Honey

Many local honey producers in Nigeria are killing trust. They are mixing sugar syrup, cassava water, anything at all, just to increase volume and make more profit. Some of them even add starch. And then you go and buy what you think is pure honey, only to realize it is complete nonsense. No health benefits, just sugar water.

But here’s the irony: the so-called imported honey that they make so much noise about in these stores, many of them are not even original. You go abroad and you hear stories of how some foreign brands producing honey are banned in their own country, but somehow they end up in our supermarkets here in Nigeria.

So tell me, where is the real, unadulterated Nigerian honey? The average Nigerian like me, like you, is just looking for one trusted source of original honey. Once we find it, we will stick to it. We don’t even want stories; just give us the real thing and take our money.

This Problem is a Gold Mine

Now, here’s the part many people don’t realize: This problem is actually a gold mine! If you, yes, you watching this, can find a way to consistently supply original, tested, unadulterated Nigerian honey, you will make money. Very few smart Nigerians are already doing this and cashing out steady and constantly.

There are homes, restaurants, pharmacies (or medicine shops as we call them) all looking for the real, natural Nigerian honey. What about Nigerians abroad? They are crying for quality honey from back home. But they need someone they can trust. And in this game, trust is the real brand you’re building.

How to Tap into This Opportunity

You don’t even need to be the one producing it. You can:

• Partner with trusted beekeepers.
• Do proper packaging.
• Maybe send it for lab testing once in a while.

Do these things, and you’re already ahead of 90% of what is in the market. Build that brand, tell that story, let people associate your name with authentic Nigerian honey.

Beyond Honey: Other Opportunities

And before I go too far, this same problem exists with palm wine and so many other Nigerian agricultural products. Many producers preserve palm wine with yeast, sugar, even dry gin. It’s hard to find the real thing unless you go deep into the village. They don’t consider the health risk to their buyers.

The issue with many Nigerian producers is greed and a short-term mindset. They forget that building a reputation is what brings money long-term. But if you’re smart, you will use that same challenge to build something solid. You will turn people’s frustration into your reputation.

My Advice for Aspiring Entrepreneurs

• Find trusted honey sources.
• Brand it.
• Stay consistent.
• Build customer loyalty.
