Top 5 Mistakes New Agro Commodity Traders Make (And How to Avoid Them)

Everybody is jumping into agro trading: palm oil, rice, sesame seeds, chasing big profits. But many people don’t realize the silent mistakes that kill their money before they even begin. In this video, I will tell you about the top five mistakes new agro commodity traders keep making and how you can avoid them. And trust me, mistake number five can scatter your whole business if you are not careful!

Welcome back to Bash1 Talks, where we talk about real opportunities in agribusiness, smart trading, and financial growth in Nigeria. Let’s go straight to the top five mistakes I see new agro traders making regularly, and I’m going to also show you how to avoid them before they cost you everything.

Mistake #1: Rushing to Buy Without Checking Real Market Prices First

You hear that sesame is hot. You go to the village, someone offers a good deal, and you jump in without checking the going rate from buyers in the town or the exporters near you. What happens? You overpay. When it’s time to sell, you realize that you have priced yourself out.

The Simple Solution: Always confirm the current prices with at least two or three different buyers. Call around. Use your network. Profit starts with how well you buy, not how fast you sell.

Mistake #2: Starting with Too Many Commodities at Once

Palm oil, crayfish, ginger, egusi, garri… Some new traders want to sell everything in one go. But when you’re new, this strategy increases your risk and reduces your focus.

The Simple Solution: Pick one or two commodities. Learn the market very well. Build your credibility. Long-term business is built on consistency and not confusion.

Mistake #3: Trusting Unknown Suppliers with Loads of Money

Someone sends you videos of ginger stock on WhatsApp. You have never met them. They sound convincing. So you send ₦600,000. After that, no network. Again, they are unreachable.

My Advice: Start with small test orders, verify people, meet them in person if possible. There’s no rush in real business. And if you’re looking for a place where people share supplier experiences, verified contacts, and actual agribusiness trading opportunities, there is a link to my vibrant Agribusiness WhatsApp community in the description. Feel free to join; it’s completely free. Regularly, on a daily basis, people are making deals on that platform.

Mistake #4: Ignoring Product Quality and Testing

You buy in bulk without checking moisture levels or inspecting for sand, stones, or smell. Then your buyer says, “Oh, this one pure?” And just like that, your goods are rejected. I’ve seen it too many times. People are in such a rush to supply that they forget to check the quality of what they are buying. In situations like this, the focus shifts to speed instead of the actual value of the goods. Yes, for sure the end buyer wants their delivery on time, but let’s not forget they also want the quality they paid for. If they ordered a bag of clean cashew nuts, then they are not expecting to see sand and stones inside that bag of cashew nuts. No matter how urgent the delivery is.

The Smart Approach: Always test small samples first. Know how to check the quality or use someone who knows how to do the quality test. Your reputation will either open doors for you or close them. Keep your buyer updated regularly on the delivery status. And most importantly, find suppliers or farmers who genuinely care about quality. That’s how you build trust and repeat business. Repeat business is the only way to grow in any business.

Mistake #5: Spending the First Profit (The Business Killer!)

Finally, and most importantly, is mistake number five: spending the first profit like you have just arrived. You make your first profit. Instead of reinvesting, you are somewhere popping drinks and celebrating your profit, or you immediately upgrade your phone. You have suddenly forgotten that the business should continue.

My Advice: Keep your whole profit and capital to reinvest in the business. Keep your first successes very quiet. You have not arrived yet. Increase your purchasing power. Learn the trade deeper. In fact, I put together a practical ebook for anyone who wants to grow a scalable agri commodity business step by step from your first deal to the long-term export plan. Conclusion

Agro trading isn’t just about buying and selling. It is about learning, adjusting, and building trust. Avoiding these five mistakes could be the difference between losing money fast and growing a stable business slowly but surely. Start where you are. Use what you have. Move wisely.
